Sofiane El Djouzi , M.D., M.S., F.R.C.S.

Bariatric Surgeon

Dr. El Djouzi is board certified in General Surgery and Fellowship trained in advanced Gastrointestinal and Laproscopic Surgery. He is fellowship trained in bariatric surgery and he was award a certificate of completion of training by the ASMBS (American Society of Metabloic and Bariatric Surgery).

He completed his medical school at the Faculty of Medicine of Algiers – Algeria. He subsequently moved to the United Kingdom to attend surgical residency training. After becoming board certified he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.  Dr. El Djouzi came to the US and started his US surgical residency. He completed his internship at the University of Illinois Chicago/MGH and completed his surgical residency at the Jewish Hospital of Cincinnati.  He then went for further specialization. As a fellow, he joined the Department of Advanced Gastrointestinal and Laparoscopic Surgery at the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. As well, he attended a full bariatric surgery-training program at the same institution.

Dr. El Djouzi is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of several surgical bodies.

Heather Hunt Nagy , MS, RDN, LD, CDE

Metabolic Dietitian

Heather Nagy is our Registered Dietitian Nutritionist. She has a Master of Science degree in Clinical Nutrition from the University of Memphis with an internship and minor in Fitness and Wellness. She completed her Dietetic Internship at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis Tennessee with a specialized Residency in Critical Care Nutrition.

Heather is also a Certified Diabetes Educator, is certified in insulin administration, and teaches the weekly Diabetes Education Classes at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center. She is licensed to practice Dietetics by the State of Missouri Division of Health Professionals Registration. She is also a Clinical Educator for VMS BioMarketing and is a Certified Personal Trainer.

Her clinical experience includes multiple areas of medical nutrition therapy such as diabetes, renal, cardiac, critical care nutrition support, transplant, oncology, and pediatrics. She has been working with bariatric surgery patients for over 10 years as a consulting dietitian.

She is a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the Bariatric Surgery/Weight Management Dietetic Practice Group, the American Association of Diabetes Educators, the American Society for Enteral and Parenteral Nutrition, and American Fitness Professionals and Associates.

Heather is married, has a step-daughter in college, and a son in college. She is on the Long Range Planning Committee for the Poplar Bluff School Board and is a member of the First Baptist Church of Poplar Bluff. She is devoted to helping patients achieve a healthy lifestyle and maintain their weight loss following surgery!

Our Program

Step 1: Informational Seminar

Attend a Free Informational Seminar: The first step toward long-term weight loss is to attend a free informational seminars to learn more of the different types of bariatric surgery and the benefits and risks associated with them. You will have the opportunity to ask any of your questions to our team. Registration is available online or by calling 855-444-PBRMC (7276).

Step 2: Financial Considerations

Insurance Coverage: Call your insurance company to check your benefits. Criteria for coverage can vary. You may also wish to consider the option of private pay.


Step 3: Surgical Consultation

Schedule a Surgical Consultation: After attending a seminar and deciding that this is something you would like to pursue, please call the office to schedule an appointment with the surgeon.

Step 4: Assessments

Consultations and Assessments: To meet established guidelines for weight loss surgery, the following consultations and assessments are required: (1) Nutritional consutlation, (2) Fitness evaluation, (3) Sleep study and (4) Psychosocial assessment.

Step 5: Clearance for Surgery

Pre-operative Appointments: You will meet with your surgeon, review your progress and results of your consultations and begin your preoperative consultations.


Step 6: Scheduling Your Surgery

Schedule your surgery: You are moving forward with surgery. Call your surgeon's office to scheulde your surgery.

Step 7: Surgery

Surgery: Learn more about the surgical procedures offered at PBRMC.

Step 8: Post-Operative Care

Follow-up Care: Follow-up care is critical to your success. Our multi-disciplinary team is here to help you with any physical, emotional, or program compliance challenges that might arise.

Support Group

We offer a support group for pre and post-surgery patients working toward their weight loss goals.
